I am deeply indebted to the award selection committee and JSCC for this recognition. I am equally thankful to Prof. Hitoshi Chiba and Prof. Shu-Ping Hui for guidance and supervision to this award winning paper entitled \u201cIdentification of molecular species of cholesteryl ester hydroperoxides in very low-density and intermediate-density lipoproteins.\u201d In this paper, we reported several molecular species of cholesteryl ester hydroperoxide (CEOOH) in the plasma and native triglyceride-rich lipoproteins. Although cholesterol, particularly carried in LDL is considered to be a prime culprit for atherosclerosis, we have been known for several decades that almost half of all myocardial infarction occurs among individuals who have average level of plasma cholesterol. Therefore, the considerable amount of research is being done to reveal biomarkers that can provide information about future cardiovascular risk above and beyond cholesterol. Since the oxidative modification of lipids is one of the major determinants of the vascular risk, the CEOOH that we have identified can be relevant targets to be used as a biomarker for the primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Furthermore, our demonstration of the existence of CEOOH in VLDL and IDL may provide new insight to understand the pathogenicity of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins.
